Ayur Yoga mats are made according to the principles of Ayur Vastra – an eco-friendly hand loom fabric dyed with Ayurvedic herbs – for fighting diabetes, skin ailments, asthma and arthritis. It’s based on the basic Ayurvedic principle that regular contact with yarn that is infused with organic herbs and medicinal plant extracts will help fight numerous ailments and provide a general sense of well being to mind and body.

We begin the process with 100% organic cotton yarn. The cotton is dried in direct sunlight and then applied with a gel like substance that contains aloe vera and camphor, which enables the dyes to bind to the yarn, giving the mats their colors.

The yarn is then dipped into a concoction of herbs and liquids called ‘kashaya’, one of which is the primary herb selected for its specific wellness benefits. Each mat is uniquely prepared with specific Ayurvedic herbs for different diseases, primarily tulsi, pomegranate, turmeric, neem, indigo, ramacham and red sandalwood.

The yarn is left to dry for 3 days and then kept in a room for 15 days for “seasoning,” a period of time that allows the fabric to dry completely and the ‘kashaya’ to settle into the fabric. It is then washed, dried in the shade, and seasoned for another 15 days.

The dyed yarn is then woven using a patented design to provide grip and support as you move through your asana practice. The woven mat is hand-brushed with a natural rubber solution prepared from rubber trees, which is applied on the back to enhance floor grip, providing balance, stability and support.

Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. In addition, regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered seed for organic farming.
